Peurifoy’s voice blends the past, the present, the future. The past is put out in compelling detail. Her present voice of experience comments upon her stories, and compassionately so. For the future, she asks her readers to bear in mind her stories and to always treat those facing the uncertainty and anxiety of illness, health challenges, and mobility challenges with respect and patience.
This work is an important addition to the expanding body of work known as the medical humanities. It’s easy to say: healthcare workers should be empathetic. The concept may be harder to apply. Such application requires reflection. Reading Ms. Peurifoy’s Triumph may bring about that reflection, and by extension a questioning and a change.
